I can feel the changing of the seasons

Commissioned by Mac Birmingham for the exhibition ‘The Butterfly Effect’ (2021).

This group exhibition features many well known artists including Dante Gabriel Rosetti, L.S Lowry and Yinka Shonibare so I am honoured to be shown in such esteemed company

This is my first moving image work made specifically for a gallery installation. It was a massive learning curve and very challenging so it is great to have been given the opportunity to try something new in an artistic context. The work ‘I can feel the changing of the seasons’ explores climate change using above and below water as an emotional metaphor.

I have been very fortunate to benefit from the skilled craftsmanship of my neighbour who has produced bespoke frames and glass work to act as a screen. The frame of the screen is Ash which has been burned using the Japanese technique of using fire to preserve – Shou Sugi Ban - referencing the rise in forest fires due to climate change.

The text on the cards reads Preserve : Taint - there are 417 of them to take away - the ppm of CO2 in the atmosphere when I was commissioned. The words relate to salt and rise in salinity in the seas.

Childrens wellingtons act as a metaphor for hope for the future.
